Encouraging bible verses about singleness
Sometimes being single can be hard. Especially if you are feeling lonely and desire to be married. In those moments when you get weary and start thinking that God has forgotten about your heart’s desire, it’s important to remember to pray during your single season.
The question then often becomes “What does God say about singleness?”.
How to better understand singleness in the bible
Before I go on sharing my favorite Bible verses about singleness, I believe it’s important to touch on something. The reason why you may be here.
I know from experience that being single can be challenging.
You may have concerns about your life and its meaning. And even though you have been a faithful steward to God, it feels like he may have forgotten about you and you are wondering if you will ever find Mr. Right.
My heart breaks for you because I know how heavy this season can feel.
That’s why I want to share a resource with you that has helped me so much when I was single. T. D. Jakes’ book Promises From God for Single Women is truly a God sent for every woman that finds herself alone for a season in her life.
This super easy read is filled with God’s promises for you and guides you through the ups and downs of single life.
Reading it helped me get closer to God and find strength. Whenever I would have one of those nights when loneliness would suddenly overwhelm me, I would read a page or chapter and feel peace again.
I can only recommend it to every single girl out there, who needs someone to lift her up. When you feel too ashamed to tell your friends and family about your struggle, read this amazing book to find comfort.
15 Bible verses about singleness
The following scriptures on singleness always remind me of God’s presence in this season. They provide reassurance and also help me to enjoy being a single Christian woman.
1 Corinthians 7:34
…An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs; Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit…
I chose this Bible verse on singleness to be the first because I want to encourage you to see singleness from Paul’s perspective. In this beautiful season, you have the potential to focus on God and his work.
Don’t waste the time you have available to wait for ‘The One’ and instead use your undivided devotion to honor God with your life.
Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Of course, the Proverbs 31 woman teaches every woman, married or not about how to become a godly woman.
Therefore, the best thing you can do to prepare yourself to be found by your future husband, it to start working on characteristics that define a godly woman. Fear the Lord, care for others, and be wise in your season of singleness.
Romans 12:1
Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.
Yep, I’m going there. Our bodies are the temple of the holy spirit and therefore need to be honored as such. Strive to obey God, by laying aside your physical desires and instead adopt godly desires that will honor him.
Acts 21:9
He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
Even though it’s only a 7-word sentence, Luke wanted us to know that Philip, the evangelist had four single daughters who prophesied.
And I think he did that to remind us that God uses men and women to share his word. So be encouraged and know that your marital status should not prevent you from actively doing God’s work.
1 Corinthians 7:7-8
I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.
First, it needs to be said that marriage, as well as singleness, are gifts from God and neither is better than the other.
However, Paul who was not married shared that he wished everybody would have the same amount of time he had to devote themselves to God’s ministry. This was possible because he did not have to care for a wife or children.
Therefore, this bible verse on being single shows that you are at an advantage when it comes to serving God because you can devote yourself completely.
Encouraging Bible verses about being single
Titus 2:6
Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
One of the hardest parts of being single is to master self-control. Because of our fleshly desires, it is easy to want to give in and do what pleases your body.
This bible verse reminds us that remaining self-controled is something that needs encouragement. So, if you are struggling with lust, find an accountability partner or group that you can invite in whenever you need prayer.
2 Corinthians 6:14
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?
The reason why Single Christians are urged not to form a binding relationship with unbelievers is that their faith may be compromised by their partners’ lifestyle. As a single woman, you are called to ‘guard your heart’ so that you may stay on the right path and not be misled by your feelings.
Genesis 2:18
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
A lot of times as a single woman you are made to feel ashamed whenever you express your desire to be married. People will say “be content in your singleness, not everybody is meant to get married.”
While I agree that peace and contentment in singleness should be a focus of your spiritual growth, I also want you to know that the desire to have a godly marriage is a good thing. It’s a God-given desire! He, himself decided that men and women shall marry.
So, I encourage you to seek God in prayer whenever you feel weak and ask him to fill you up with his presence and a job that surpasses all understanding.
Song of Songs: 2:7/ 3:5/ 8:4
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.
Now we all know that whenever something is repeated in the Bible it should be paid special attention to. This verse is repeated 3 times throughout the book of Song of Songs.
As women, our emotions sometimes overpower our logic and reasoning. Unfortunately, these same emotions can be misleading or even vanish after a while.
As a single Christian woman, you should make sure that you are not guided by infatuation but love. And even more, so that you don’t hurry into a romantic relationship, without the commitment necessary to make it last.
Make sure you understand the nature of a woman and what makes us different from men. A good way is by looking for bible verses about women and understanding your identity in Christ.
Psalm 119:9-10
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.
This bible verse about purity does not need a lot of explanation. Remaining pure is only possible by seeking God and not following the ways of the world.
Comforting Bible Verses about singleness
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Believe it or not, your main focus during your single season should not be “How to get a man” but how to draw closer to God. Abiding in God’s presence, delighting in his law, and trusting in his promises will help you receive God’s best for your life.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
There is a season for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
No matter how much you may despise this season of singleness, the fact is God thinks it is necessary! He might be teaching you an important lesson you will need for marriage, or it might just simply not be the right time. God has a plan, all you need to do is to start the work and remain joyful.
Psalm 84:11
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
Our God is a good God, that has the best in mind for you. And even though he does not promise to give us everything, he will give us what we need to do his work.
Psalm 68:6
God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
I love this scripture for singles because it reminds us of God’s love for us. He desires to give us safety and belonging by providing us with a community of believers.
Isaiah 43:4
Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for you.
Beloved (yes this is what God calls you)! Remember that your identity in Christ is not found in your relationship status. And if you think it is, then you might need to learn how to love yourself first, before looking for a godly marriage.
God loves you too much to let you marry someone that doesn’t know how precious you are to him. Rest assured that he will send you a good man when the time is right. But until then don’t let anyone that doesn’t know your value, determine your worth.
What does the Bible say about being single?
As a single woman in the church, it’s very easy to feel at a disadvantage. With a lot of ministries failing to address singles and undermining their needs, it seems like single people are not valued as much.
The truth is God does not favor married people over singles. But God has equally beautiful promises for single women as well.
The bible encourages men and women to be patient and utilize singleness as a season to pursue their purpose and grow in their faith. In addition, we learn about a number of single women in the Bible, such as Rahab, Esther, or Mary Magdalene, that God uses for his glory.
The Bible calls this season a gift from God in multiple bible verses on singleness. He stresses that a single person is at an advantage because he/she gets to completely devote their life to Christ.
And I know from experience that using your single season to focus on who you are will serve you in the long run. Because once you get into a relationship and forge a soul tie with your future partner you want to make sure you keep God at the center.
However, that does not mean that you have to remain single. Just like Paul sums it up in 1 Corinthians 7, each person has their own gift and calling from God, which may or may not include marriage.
Therefore, if you are contemplating whether God called you to be single, ask yourself what God has called you to do with your life. Will marriage serve to advance His kingdom? Remind yourself of God’s Promises for Single Women.
