Bible Verses about Loneliness

With winter approaching I know that a lot of single Christian women struggle with loneliness. I have been there more times than I can count and know from experience that it’s tough.

Another holiday season alone can feel demoralizing and scary. Anxiety and sadness are running high.

Loneliness is internal.

And the best way to cure your loneliness is from the inside out. For that, you can either search for inspirational loneliness quotes or lean on the love of God.

So I decided to share 10 Bible Verses about loneliness that will give you strength this season.

What is a good Bible verse for loneliness?

Before I share the different Bible verses about loneliness you can find throughout the holy Bible, I want to share my favorite one.

A scripture for when you feel very lonely as a single woman.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7

The worst thing about loneliness is the crippling anxiety you feel.

The uncertainty of whether or not your situation will ever change. Whenever you feel like that, the above Bible verse should be your first defense.

Remind yourself and that loud voice in your head that your heavenly father has not forgotten about you. That will calm your heart and mind.

10 Bible verses about loneliness

1. Psalm 25:16

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted.

Loneliness and depression are too often dealt with alone due to shame and fear.

But sometimes all you need to do is to call on God and let him know “I am lonely”. He will do his work in your situation and show you grace.

2. Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

I think that the most significant pain you experience being lonely is that you feel abandoned and unloved at times.

This can easily lead to worry and fear because you feel as if the weight of the world rests on your shoulders.

Thankfully God has chosen us as his people. And that means that he is with you, even in times of struggle.

3. 1 Peter 5:7

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

If you have read any other Bible verse articles on my blog, then you know that this scripture is my favorite.

Anxiety is one of these emotions that is triggered whenever I feel restless. And in seasons of loneliness oftentimes our thoughts run wild and lead us down a dark hole of what-ifs.

So, if your feelings of loneliness come from being single, then I challenge you to truly surrender your cares to God.

He knows and cares for you and will give you comfort.

Loneliness in the Bible

4. Psalm 139:7-10

Where can I go from your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

A lot of times when I feel lonely, I also feel alone. Meaning that it feels like suddenly there is no one around to support, encourage or love me.

Thankfully, the Bible is very clear that there is nowhere you can go that God is not present and with you.

He wants to have a very real relationship with you, similar to a good friend. So rest assured that He is right by your side.

5. Joshua 1:5-6

No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

We all know the story of Moses. He wandered through the wilderness and took on the most lonely job there is – shepherd.

And even though he was alone for long stretches of time, God used them to mold Moses into the man that would eventually lead Israel out of Egypt.

Just like God was always with him, he is with you.

6. Psalm 68:5-6

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

I believe this is the most encouraging bible verse in this compilation because it reassures us that our God is close to the ones hurting.

No matter what the reason is for your feeling of loneliness, God wants you to be part of his family of believers.

He will provide you with a community to lift your sadness and loneliness.

7. Isaiah 43:2-3

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel…

Let’s be honest for a moment and acknowledge that life is hard. It has ups and downs and often these downs leave us feeling overwhelmed, burned out, and alone.

But through it all, we have God’s love!

He gives us air to breathe, peace so that we can rest, and hope so that we can look forward to the future.

Don’t allow your current season to get the best of you. Instead, incorporate a prayer routine. Use these bible verses about loneliness daily and you will see how God’s word will bring you comfort.

9. John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

I know that you think that all you need now is company, friends, family, and maybe even a partner. But unless you learn to enjoy being single, you will end up feeling lonely even when you are married later on.

God’s peace surpasses all understanding and is what keeps us going in the midst of suffering.

10. Psalm 34:17

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.

Last but not least, I want to leave you with this important promise and that is that God hears your cries and your prayers. The love of Christ finds you even in the darkest valley.

What does the Bible say about being lonely and single?

When it comes to feeling lonely due to singleness, God reminds us in several scripture quotations that he is right by our side. Even if we have never seen him.

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is made complete in us. – 1 John 4:12

Remind yourself daily that you are not alone out here because the holy spirit is by your side every day. Jesus didn’t leave you unarmed against your own thoughts and the lies of the enemy.

And when you cultivate your own relationship with the holy spirit, the God of peace will give you comfort.
