Tips to keep your 4c hair moisturized longer
If you have 4c hair, you know that it can feel dry and rough at times. And sometimes you just don’t have time for a full natural hair routine.
If so, you’ve come to the right place.
My name is Justine, the author behind this blog and I have raw natural 4c hair, that is also high-porosity.
That means keeping my hair moisturized is very important.
That’s why in this article, I’m sharing my personal tips on how to moisturize 4c hair daily to ensure maximum hydration.
How to Moisturize 4C Hair Daily:
The easiest way to moisturize your 4c hair daily is by using a refresher spray.
You can make this easy spray by mixing water and a leave-in conditioner of your choice in a spray bottle.
Simply mist your hair with the spray every morning to keep it hydrated.
9 tips to keep your 4C hair moisturized
Maintaining moisture in 4C hair after wash day can be a challenge, but it is crucial for healthy hair growth.
Thankfully, you can increase the amount of time your hair stays moisturized by using the right hair care products and hair care routine.
Here are some tips to help you keep your 4C hair moisturized:
1. Use a Sulfate-Free Shampoo
Start with a moisturizing shampoo that doesn’t contain any sulfates or parabens and is specifically designed for 4C hair.
Ideally, look for shampoos that contain natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or shea butter.
These ingredients help to nourish and hydrate your hair.
2. Deep Condition Regularly
Next, deep condition your hair regularly.
Deep conditioning treatments are essential to 4C hair because they help to restore moisture and prevent breakage.
Use a deep conditioner at least every 2 weeks, and leave it on for a minimum of 30 minutes.
To get the best results you can even steam your natural hair under a hooded dryer to help the product penetrate your hair shaft better.
3. Use the LOC Method
The best way to keep your hair moisturized for days is by using the loc method.
A method in which you layer a liquid, oil, and cream on top of each other for extra moisture.
4. Start with a Leave-In Conditioner
First, you must use a moisturizing product, like a leave-in conditioner for some extra care after washing your 4C hair.
Look for a leave-in moisturizer that is specifically formulated for your hair type and contains emollients that can help lock in moisture.
Apply it to your hair after washing and deep-conditioning it.
5. Seal in Moisture with Oil
After applying your leave-in conditioner, seal in the moisture with a natural oil like jojoba oil, argan oil, or castor oil.
These essential oils help to lock in moisture and prevent your hair from drying out.
6. Add a Hair Butter
Lastly, finish off by applying a hair butter. I love shea butter and can only recommend it.
This is part of that so-called LOC or LCO method, which is the ultimate moisture retention routine for natural 4C hair.
7. Drink Plenty of Water
Drinking enough water is not only essential for your overall health, but it also helps keep your hair hydrated.
Aim to drink at least 2 liters of water every day to keep your hair and skin healthy.
8. Use a Daily Moisturizer
If a refresher spray is not enough, then using a daily moisturizer is another great way to keep your 4c hair hydrated.
Look for a lightweight, water-based leave-in conditioner that won’t weigh your hair down.
9. Protect Your Hair at Night
Lastly, protecting your hair at night can also help prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. Use a satin or silk bonnet or scarf to protect your hair while you sleep.
By following these tips, you can keep your 4C hair moisturized and healthy long after wash day has passed.
However, remember to listen to your hair and adjust your routine as needed.
Should You Moisturize Your 4C Hair Everyday?
The answer is yes! You should absolutely moisturize your 4C hair daily, especially if you have dry hair.
However, moisturizing your natural hair does not mean that you have to full-on wash it with shampoo.
In fact, washing your 4C hair with shampoo every day can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage.
Instead, you can use water or water-based moisturizers and leave-ins to keep your hair hydrated until your next wash day.
Water is the ultimate moisturizer for your natural hair. It helps bring life back to dull, dry, lifeless curls.
Of course, everyone’s hair is different. Based on whether you have high porosity hair or low porosity hair you may need to adjust your moisturizing routine.
Therefore, I suggest you find out your hair porosity first.
Some girls, like me, may need to moisturize their hair once a day, while others may only need to do so every other day.
So, make sure you adjust your routine based on your hair’s needs.

Tips to keep your 4C hair moisturized in braids
Protective styles, especially braids are a great way to keep your natural hair from breaking.
But they can also lead to dryness and breakage if not properly moisturized.
In order to avoid that, here are some tips to keep your 4C hair moisturized while in braids:
- Use a refresher spray: A refresher spray is the best option for daily use because it can wet your hair as well as your scalp easily. Simply mist your braids with a refresher spray every day to keep them moisturized.
- Use a leave-in conditioner: Alternatively, a lightweight leave-in conditioner that doesn’t weigh your hair down is great if you have a little more time in the morning.
- Apply oil to your scalp: Applying a light oil, such as jojoba or grapeseed oil, to your scalp is a great way to get your roots the vitamins they need. For easy application, use a dropper to apply the oil directly to your scalp.
- Use a satin bonnet or scarf: Sleeping with a satin scarf or bonnet will help to keep your braids moisturized by preventing moisture from escaping.
- Don’t overuse products: While it’s important to keep your hair moisturized, using too many products can lead to buildup and weigh your braids down. Stick to a few key products and use them sparingly.
By following these tips, you can keep your 4C hair moisturized while in braids and prevent breakage and dryness.
