flaxseed gel on 4c hair
When I first started this blog during the pandemic I used to try out DIY hair products all the time. It was super fun and empowering. I created my own Avocado hair mask and Aloe Vera oil. But then the world re-opened and I lost interest.
Lately, however, I have been re-inspired. And during my research this time I came across flax seeds and their benefits to hair and skin.
So, if you are a fellow curly girl, looking to improve the health of your hair or simply find an alternative to other 4c hair styling gels, I got you.
Here is everything you need to know about flaxseed gel on 4c hair and stay tuned for my DIY flaxseed gel at the end.
What is flaxseed gel?
Flaxseed gel is a natural hair styling product that has gained popularity among women with natural coily and curly hair in recent years. It is made by boiling flaxseeds in hot water which makes them release their natural oils and thus results in a thick gel-like substance.
Flax seeds contain a number of vitamins, healthy fats, and nutrients, which makes their gel a great addition to your hair care routine. The vitamin E alone provides nutrition to your scalp that helps with inflammation.
In addition, the protein helps your hair grow faster and longer by providing nourishment to your hair follicles. And lastly, the omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants are instrumental in preventing hair loss and overall scalp health.
Is flaxseed gel good for 4C hair?
Yes, flaxseed gel is good for 4c hair. In fact, flaxseed hair gel is a popular and effective natural hair styling product for women with 4c hair, because of its moisturizing properties as well as curl definition.
Because 4c hair is more prone to breakage compared to other hair types, it requires a lot of moisture and protection to prevent hair breakage. In contrast to regular hair gels, flaxseed gel doesn’t just provide good hold and defined curls.
It also provides moisture and nourishes the scalp, which makes it an excellent choice for a styling gel. You can create beautiful natural hairstyles using a DIY flax seed gel while ensuring that your 4c hair stays hydrated and healthy.

How often to use flaxseed gel on 4c hair?
How often you use flaxseed gel on your 4c hair depends on your natural hair needs and styling preferences. However, in general, you don’t want to use flaxseed gel more than once or twice a week.
Why? Because like any other store-bought gel, it’s important not to use too much product on your hair. This can lead to product buildup and clog your scalp.
Ideally, you only want to use it to style your hair. Whether you want a good wash and go with bouncy curls or well-defined twist outs. Flaxseed gel can help. Especially, if you have brittle hair or very frizzy curls.
Just don’t overdo it.
Does flaxseed gel make your hair grow?
Okay, here is the thing. Flaxseed gel does not necessarily make your hair grow. But it can promote a healthy scalp and hair, which in return helps with hair growth in the long run.
Flaxseeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to have numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation and promoting healthy hair growth.
And when used as a hair styling product, flaxseed gel helps to moisturize and nourish your natural hair, providing a natural hold without the use of harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients.
Something that many popular gels such as my beloved eco styler gel and gummy hair wax do not have in common.
So yea, making your own flaxseed gel can be a great way to increase your chances for hair growth.
However, if you really want to grow your hair there are more steps to take. I share how to grow your 4c hair faster and longer here.
Can you leave flaxseed gel in your hair?
Yes, you can leave flaxseed gel in your hair. As a matter of fact, some girls even use it as a leave-in conditioner and feel comfortable leaving it in for a long time or even overnight.
It’s because Flaxseed gel is made of natural ingredients. So it doesn’t include anything that could harm your natural 4c hair.
Leaving flaxseed gel in your hair can help to lock in moisture, while simultaneously providing hold for a simple slick bun or other beautiful sleek styles throughout the day.
However, it’s important to wash your hair regularly to avoid buildup and ensure that your hair and scalp stay healthy.
How long should you leave flaxseed gel on?
Ultimately, how long you leave flaxseed gel on your hair depends on the hairstyle. If it’s a protective style it may stay in for a few days or even weeks. Thankfully, like many other natural hair products it won’t harm your hair health.
However, in order to keep your scalp healthy and free of residue, you want to wash your 4c hair regularly. Meaning you do not keep your flaxseed gel in passed wash day.
And of course, if you notice any negative effects such as greasy or weighed-down hair, you may need to adjust your usage or duration as well.
Should I wet my hair before applying flaxseed gel?
Yes, you definitely want to wet your hair before applying flaxseed gel. However, you don’t want wet hair that is dripping with water. You want damp hair.
Why? Because if you read my natural 4c hair regimen, you know that water is the most important ingredient for our hair type and therefore it needs to be moisturized properly every time.
But also because the water can help to distribute the flaxseed gel more evenly throughout your hair and define your curls more effectively. And lastly, when your hair is wet it is more receptive to product absorption, which can enhance the moisturizing properties of the gel.
So make sure you either apply the gel after washing it or simply use a water spray bottle to mist your hair.
Now that you know everything there is to know about flaxseed gel, let’s try it out.
